It is with greatest honor to declare that the GEM competition has received an unprecedented number of participants from the worldwide architectural community. The final official count for submittals for the first phase of this competition amounted to more than 1550 entries from 85 countries. Not only the number is staggering, but also the quality of entries and the professional caliber is remarkable. We are all impressed by the seriousness and uniqueness of ideas presented in this phase of the competition. It is indeed a message of appreciation to Egypt ’s civilization and culture. We believe that many architects, who decided to participate in this competition, did so not only for winning a competition, but mainly to share their architectural ideas and dreams with us. In their totality the designs submitted represent the state of “architecture today.”

A committee of architectural scholars and critics has been devoting 12 hours a day, 6 days a week, during the entire 55 days reserved for technical examination and scrutiny. All members of the technical committee have decided to read every single word, examine every drawing or sketch, and decipher every thought or concept presented by all architects. We all share the same conviction that it is only fare to spare neither effort nor time for this competition similarly to all architects who invested such incredible effort and time in presenting their designs. We all work hard in order to prepare for the jury deliberations and the final selection of the 20 runners up.

Finally, it is necessary to express our deep appreciation for your efforts, and please stay tuned for further announcements.

      Coordinator of the Technical Committee
